Probabilistic Constraints in Language Acquisition
نویسندگان
چکیده
An approach to language acquisition is described in which the foundational questions are about how the child acquires adult-like language processing capacities. This approach assumes that the child’s primary task is not to identify the grammar of the target language, but rather to learn to comprehend and produce utterances in the service of communicating with others. In this framework the input to the child is seen as providing a rich source of probabilistic information, and notions of the target language are provided by constraint satisfaction models of adult performance. The methodology involves implementing connectionist models that simulate detailed aspects of performance.

Probabilistic models of language processing and acquisition.
Probabilistic methods are providing new explanatory approaches to fundamental cognitive science questions of how humans structure, process and acquire language. This review examines probabilistic models defined over traditional symbolic structures. Language comprehension and production involve probabilistic inference in such models; and acquisition involves choosing the best model, given innate...
متن کاملA probabilistic constraints approach to language acquisition and processing
This article provides an overview of a probabilistic constraints framework for thinking about language acquisition and processing. The generative approach attempts to characterize knowledge of language (i.e., competence grammar) and then asks how this knowledge is acquired and used. Our approach is performance oriented: the goal is to explain how people comprehend and produce utterances and how...

متن کاملProbabilistic Constraints in Acquisition
This paper presents a connectionist model of verb argument structure assignment that relies on probabilistic information regarding particular verbs, as well as semantic information shared among several verbs. The model illustrates how co-occurrence relations among different levels of linguistic representation may interact in acquisition by contributing to the discovery of language specific well...
متن کاملSupport vector regression with random output variable and probabilistic constraints
Support Vector Regression (SVR) solves regression problems based on the concept of Support Vector Machine (SVM). In this paper, a new model of SVR with probabilistic constraints is proposed that any of output data and bias are considered the random variables with uniform probability functions. Using the new proposed method, the optimal hyperplane regression can be obtained by solving a quadrati...
متن کاملLanguage Has Evolved to Depend on Multiple-Cue Integration
Recent research on language evolution suggests that language to a large extent has been shaped by cultural evolution to fit domain-general constraints deriving from the human brain. An implication of this view is that much of the neural hardware involved in language is not specific to it. This means that language has to be acquired largely by mechanisms that are not uniquely dedicated for this ...
